Summer 2019 Issue 99
Up until the first week of June, the weather had still not settled. This year we had our fair share of strong winds and awful sand-filled showers. The weather has thankfully improved and we will definitely be blessed with decent temperatures.
An article on ‘Influence across continents’ talks about how a Maltese interior designer, Justine Bartolo, has incorporated the bold design culture of her clients, making for a home away from home, on page 14.
This issue of Design & Decor is an exciting one, in which we feature a range of beautiful homes and apartments, together with other interesting topics like interior design, a touch of gardening, summer recipes and a spot of motoring, featuring the Smart fortwo coupe. This is your last chance to acquire such a version since petrol engines have now gone out of production, Malcolm J. Naudi writes on page 124. Our cover story features the Pippa Toledo Studio, renowned for transforming downtrodden furniture into stunning pieces that fit perfectly in any contemporary space – more on page 12. A Portomaso apartment, designed by Pippa Toledo, is transformed into a space her clients could feel was completely their own. She explains how this stunning result was achieved on page 34. A prestigious former family home is converted to luxury apartments in a historical setting on page 46. Andrea Christians writes about this in ‘Whisper of the past’. Hanna J. Dunne writes about a beachfront designer home in Mellieha on page 62, the home of Jo Dounis, an interior designer and artist. Three artists talk passionately about their art. Vickie Tonna writes about colours, tone and texture on page 98. James Vella Clark sees art as a means of escape from the mundane on page 102, while Maris Zammit talks about the wonderful world of art on page 106. Come autumn and you will enjoy reading about traditional homes, with beautiful photographs that will surely capture your attention. Thank you once again for your many letters and e-mails that reach us, in which you not only tell us that your enjoy the contents of the magazine, but also provide us with useful information and new ideas. I wish you all a happy summer holiday, especially those of you who are going abroad on a much-needed break.
We sincerely hope that you will enjoy this summer issue of Design & Decor – as much as you enjoyed the previous ones.
Happy reading!
