Spring-Summer 2024 Issue 107

It often feels like the months between each printed issue fly past in a blur, as we hold lengthy discussions, search for potential topics to feature, and conclude negotiations successfully—most of the time anyway!

And suddenly, Spring has sprung, and warm days are back—happily coinciding with our latest edition of Design & Décor No. 107!

As our woollies are tossed aside, the fragrance of budding blooms fills the air, and fresh summery fruits become more widely available, as I could see when I visited the wonderful citrus garden at Villa Fort. I am definitely attempting their suggested recipes with oranges one day at home.

Talking of food, this issue presents explosions of flavours, as both our resident chefs, Ljuana and Romeo, share their delightful recipes using local and international cuisines, while in Valletta, a unique fusion menu by Kaiseki restaurant ensured our tasting session there was one we would love to repeat—and highly recommend! And if you really want to paint the town red like the Maltese, you can just pop across the road to The Capitol City Bar for an evening of cocktails, music, and fun!

A visit to The Phoenicia Malta is always memorable—I just love the rich history found within its walls. While we were there, we sneaked a peek at the beautiful new Contessa, with its recently unveiled terrace conservatory. And next time you visit this superb hotel, I invite you to view the display cases by Gio. Batta Delia, and choose from an assortment of luxury items from Herend and Halcyon Days.

It would, of course, be unconventional if this edition did not present our usual array of spectacular homes—with a few palaces thrown in. I felt like a royal as I discovered the fascinating history behind Palazzo D’Aurel. And what can I say about the converted townhouse in Cospicua, the renovated family apartment in Sliema, and the refurbished boutique hotel at Palazzo Castagna, where Jim Dunn took us behind the scenes—and immediately made me wish I could book a relaxing staycation there.

Jim also takes us cruising down the Nile, as well as sweeping us off to a picturesque mountain village in Majorca to stay in a 17th-century castle. This issue is really beginning to sound like a fairy tale, isn’t it?

Art lovers can read about Rune Bo Jakobsen’s interesting sculptures, while Gozitan resident, Tracey Polea, shows us her stunning metal carvings and copperplate etchings. We also have something for the men—well, even for female car enthusiasts—with our pieces on the prestigious Giro Di Sicilia for classic cars, as well as the timeless Jaguar E-Type.

Do you wish to learn more about the origins of interior scents? Do you want to know where you can acquire artisanal décor items? Would you like to discover how superyachts are kept supplied with wine? Are you seeking an exceptional shopping mall experience?

All you have to do is sit back, flick through these pages, and savour the exclusive features we enjoyed dreaming up especially for you.

Happy reading!

Sue Arnett
