Laguna Living

Words Kristine Bonnici

We have recently finished working on a stunning apartment situated at the Portomaso Laguna. The terrace leads directly onto the Laguna, with private pool access from each bedroom.

As one of the most frequent gathering spots for family and friends, whether you’re hosting a movie night or a cocktail party, living rooms should be welcoming and cosy – but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. These living rooms from the AD archives embrace a minimalist, modern aesthetic to great effect. Each space boasts a curated selection of clean-lined, contemporary furnishings warmed up with ever-so-subtle touches like luxurious upholstery, colourful artwork, and fresh greenery.

Our concept for this luxury interior was based on the use of natural colours and textures embracing a contemporary aesthetic to great effect. Each space boasts a curated selection of clean contemporary furnishings warmed up with ever-so-subtle touches like luxurious texture and blue accents.

Subtle blue linen effect wallpaper was added to the hall, which contrasts with the white walls and leads the eye towards the open plan space and directly onto the terrace overlooking the Laguna and the Mediterranean beyond.

One of the unique features of this apartment is the glass floor beneath the dining room, through which the pool is visible. The vibrant Mediterranean blue of the pool is picked up in the water washed wallpaper framing the dining room. This wallpaper is reflected in the glass floor and adds an interesting dimension to the space. A beautiful oval table on a sculptural metal base is surrounded by cocoon-like chairs upholstered in soft blue velvet. These are positioned over the glass floor, so you’re effectively dining over water.

The living room sofa features clean lines with an emphasis on luxurious comfort and the interesting use of texture. The walnut divider between the sofas provides useful storage, while the coffee table is a series of fabric poufs for additional seating, with a timber bridge to provide a surface for placing drinks.

A relaxing reading nook in front of the terrace is created with the two bright turquoise armchairs in front of the terrace doors. Soft blue was used for key pieces of furniture – the audiovisual cabinet beneath the television, the designer bar behind the sofa, and in small surprising doses throughout the apartment.

The large kitchen island in white glass contrasts with the grey glass on the wall cupboards. Hardwearing quartz counter tops with mitred edges in grey and white minimise the visual impact of the island. The kitchen was designed with luxury and comfort in mind. It includes high-end appliances, a built-in steamer and coffee machine.

The apartment features three bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms. All the rooms are furnished in tonal blues, with interesting conversation pieces such as the solid raw cedar armchair and table in one of the bedrooms. A stunning deep-buttoned headboard adds an element of luxury to the main bedroom, and its opulence is offset by the gilded metal cube table lamps on either side. Simple features, such as blue shelves lining the interior of the wardrobes, wide blue borders to frame the curtains and blue velvet stripes on the bedlinen create rhythm and help to enhance the design of the interior.

White and blue patio furniture was selected for the terrace, with a series of three outdoor poufs dotting the decked space. An interesting cube LED light adds interest to the exterior. The comfortable seating on the terrace helps to create a gathering spot for family and friends to enjoy the stunning views of the Laguna.

A great deal of attention was paid to the detail of the design, creating layer upon layer of luxurious elements that emphasise the importance of a cohesive concept for the interior.
