Sleep is vital for the health of every person in order to survive. It is a necessary restorative activity that helps each one of us regenerate energy. This is the reason why the bedroom is often considered as the most important place in one’s home. Everybody should give their best to ensure that their bedroom is as comfortable as possible. A bed paired with a comfy mattress are amongst the basic essentials of a bedroom. But, once you have this basic element in place, it is time to spice up the area. An upholstered headboard can be the perfect addition to a simple bed, which will not only jazz up the appearance of your bed, but also add an attractive focal point to your bedroom.

Upholstered headboards became popular during the 17th century, as the demand for comfort increased and draping fabric on canopy beds died out. The bedroom became more private during this time, and the need to show off had moved to other rooms in the home. Once seen only in posh hotels, upholstered headboards have been making headway in today’s residential bedrooms.

Headboards add a touch of elegance and whimsy to any bedroom. It gives the bedroom a polished look and makes the room look more inviting and cozy. With so many different types of upholstered headboards on the market, you’re spoiled for choice. The style is a very personal thing and a very important factor to consider when redecorating. Upholstered headboards vary so much in style - some give a tailored masculine look, some are stark and modern, some add Regency glamour, and others are completely over the top  so you are sure to find something perfectly suited to your tastes. Traditional, tufted button and overstuffed styles look charming with a traditional bed base whilst a slick, contemporary fabric headboard upholstered in chic fabric with a minimalist design is perfect for a more modern look.

The choice of fabric is as important as the design of an upholstered headboard. Oils from hair and skin can quickly damage and stain a headboard. To ensure you end up with the perfect fabric for your upholstered headboard, get a fabric swatch so you can see and touch exactly what you’re getting in terms of quality.

As with the colour, opt for a fabric that complements the other furniture in your bedroom and choose from a wide variety of fabrics including jacquard, chenille, linen amongst others. Seams or edges around the edge of the headboard can be covered or finished with cording and decorative nail heads.

An other benefit of Upholstered headboards is that, you won’t end up with a nasty bump on your head. Besides, your back will also get a cushioned rest every time you decide to read your favourite book, or sit relaxed with your laptop on the bed. Get the height right when you select or customize a headboard, make sure it is tall enough to accommodate extra-thick mattresses or oversize pillows, especially if you plan to use large pillow shams.

To really enjoy your bed you should make it pleasing to the eyes by adding an upholstered headboard because truly enjoying the warmth that your bed can give you will offer a very soothing sleep experience.
