Home safety risks during the festive season

Christmas is upon us, and that can only mean one thing – time to get planning! From presents to lunches, decorations to music, there’s so much to consider. It’s easy to get caught up in the festivities and forget about one of the most important things – the safety of your loved ones.

People may not immediately connect Christmas with safety, but there are a couple of things that you should look out for; as highlighted by our friends at GasanMamo Insurance, whose expertise and experience in the field of risk assessment has helped identify some common hazards which become common over the festive season.

Christmas tree lights and home appliances

When installing your lights, do make sure to check that they work well. Never leave the lights switched on when you are not at home, as this can easily lead to a short circuit and/or overheating resulting in a fire.

Christmas lights should be marked with a trustworthy safety standard. Bear in mind that it is important not to overload electric sockets. Also, before going to bed at night or when leaving the house, unplug all lights and other electrical appliances. Most importantly of all, ensure that your electric blanket is switched off especially when you leave your home.

Candles are a simple way to make your home look festive but they need to be looked after responsibly. Candles should never be left unattended or placed near curtains, trees, or flammable material. A good modern alternative to a naked flame is the use of LED candles, a safer option to traditional candles.

If you do opt for traditional wax candles, it is important to keep them well out of reach of children and pets, on an appropriate candleholder placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface.

During this festive season, homes are more frequently left unoccupied as people spend time out and about shopping, visiting friends and relatives and enjoying the festive spirit at Christmas parties or get togethers. People are also more likely to take an extended break at Christmas time, increasing the risk of theft at home.

Nowadays with the widespread use of social media, it is important to take extra care of what information to divulge or upload on the internet and social media pages. If you are going to be abroad during this period, it is of utmost importance not to leave any answering machine messages stating you are abroad.

Festive feasting

Life can be particularly busy during this time of the year. If you are having family and friends over for lunch, plan accordingly to avoid any unnecessary stress. You too need to enjoy the time you are spending with your family. It would also be sensible to take some precautions whilst cooking. On this day, do not leave any unattended appliances switched on as these can lead to a fire.

Children should be kept away from the kitchen whilst preparations for your festive feast are underway. Bear in mind that getting help is not a sign of inefficiency. Why not ask a friend or a relative to help you keep children occupied whilst you finish the cooking? You can use it as an excuse to create a new, fun, festive tradition.

These are just a few risks that may arise. It is important that you enjoy this festive season with peace of mind knowing you are fully covered for the unexpected! A comprehensive home insurance policy can do exactly that – not just during the festive season, but throughout the year. Why not pay a visit to to get a quick quote, or even to buy a new insurance policy?
